Intake works (structure 2313)

Until recently, the remains of the water intake works lay within the dike near the Haere Estate. This is one of the military defense elements from the Cold War and the IJssel Line. The IJssel Line Foundation, which oversees and administers various parts of this defensive structure for the benefit of interested visitors, wanted to have the water intake works included in the Foundation collection. The opportunity for doing so came at the end of April 2005 when the Province of Overijssel began the construction of a bike path between Deventer and Olst.
In cooperation with the Province and various other interests, and financed by a grant from the European Union, it was decided to make the intake works visible, substantially restored to their original condition. In mid-July, the project was started. It was completed in November 2005.

The water intake works in the IJssel dike at Olst are completely restored and open to visitors.
This type of water intake works, together with other facilities, was intended to flood (inundate) land inside the dikes. Each section had a gate shaped like a quarter of a cylinder mounted on a horizontal axel which could be moved to a closed or open position, thereby allowing a controlled flow of water to reach the desired depth of flooding. There were in total 7 of these intakes built, varying in width from 2 to 12 openings.

“Our” intake works consists of 5 such openings and is + 32 meters wide.
